DaveValvo > This panorama is what the Federal troops would have seen as they marched across the hill top towards the upper part eastern of Sunken road. August 25, 2009
DaveValvo > Bloody Lane or Sunken Road at Antietam looking west from Roullete Lane. August 25, 2009. Note the process of stitching this pano distorted the direction of Roulette Lane. It runs perpendicular to the Sunken road. If time permits I will restitch .
DaveValvo > X marks the spot I first thought was where Gardner put his tripod. I was wrong. See the other Antietam gallery for the correct position and how I found it.
DaveValvo > Blood Lane from the East.
DaveValvo > Bloody Lane 1885 USAHMI, Courtesy "Antietam - Then and Now". Photograph was recorded by a veterans' excursion from Massachusetts in 1885 and shows the lane looking South East. The entrance to Roulette Lane is visible at the center. On September 17th, 1862, 5000 men died here in 3 hours between 9AM and 12 PM. Wave after wave of Federal solders crashed against Confederate solders entrenched here.
DaveValvo > Photograph of Bloody Lane, October 25, 2009, looking South East from a slightly different perspective from the previous image. In the distance, Brian Baracz, NPS ranger, leads a tour group and describes the battle.
DaveValvo > Alexander Gardner's Famous image of Sunken Road or Bloody Lane taken two days after the battle, September 19, 1862. These two images were taken before the first image in my other Antietam gallery because the sun angle is higher. Note: there are no Federal dead shown in any images.
DaveValvo > Today's view of previous Gardner image. Correctly located at "F" in the "Photography at Antietam - A Battlefield Tour". See next map image.
DaveValvo > The X is at the top of the hill.
